| final mixes... |
[02 Apr 2009|12:11pm] |
I've been listening to the final mixes for X all morning. I think it's pretty kick ass... spending so much time in protools is showing I think finally. I had a bit of a learning curve from cubase for the switchover but i'm happy i did. I've been dwelling on my bass parts of course but i think they even came out well considering it was my first time recording myself playing anything but keys live...
I have 5 new tracks and a 6th remix I did of the title track. Waiting on vocals from victoria lloyd for the final mix of Elbows Bent At Right Angles and hopefully a possible last track entitled Junkie Blvd featuring her as well. ;)
The 2 remixes from Lucidstatic are so killer!!!! A sick drum'n'bass remix of The Witching Hour and it's almost a cover of To Live,Love,Die or Kill. Can't wait to hear the other remixes as they come in. But it's all on schedule for release so far.
The art is complete as well and you can see a pic of it at the tympanik web site...

| Studio Sale? |
[19 Feb 2009|01:03pm] |
|
So I moved the studio... it wasn't economical to keep the room for it anymore so I'll be getting rid of a bunch of stuff if anyone is interested here in Toronto. I have a bunch of pro sound foam, 3 big sheets and pieces and 4 corner bass traps. Possibly a DX27 and Oberheim Matrix 1000 rack module as well...

| soul searching... |
[08 Feb 2009|07:46pm] |
I usually don't get too personal on here anymore... but I've been going through something since I lost my job... something good I think. I'm not upset about losing my job so much as gaining time to grow and think about my life and music. I've been in the studio so much in the past week, It's given me time to think about my future and expand on some older ideas I had that never came through for lack of time or whatever reason. I've found my zen again. I think I've worked for 3 years straight and forgot who the fuck I am in the process.
I started to learn a new instrument... I've been learning the bass guitar at home in my spare time. I'm such a geek I even bought a 'how to play bass for dummmies' guide. This week was the first time I've recorded anything with it... now don't get me wrong, I'm no wiz with the bass yet but I'm learning and that feels awesome.
I added it to my myspace player for the time being... I felt like sharing. It's not done. I don't know what it will even be when it's done. But there it is. d.

| looking forward... |

Man, it's been a weird time lately... I've been pretty quiet for the most part too busy to deal with life or music because of my job. That's ended, I was let go last week. Been dwelling on it since and I think I'm actually looking forward to being a "starving" artist again and getting some much needed catch up time on my music. I've redone the studio, and I've working on a Savak remix for the past few days. I've done 2 already and although, I feel I'm not there yet, it's a really fun exercise to have back in my life. So i'm looking forward to this afternoon's attempt.

| Makin' Music |
[08 Nov 2008|06:47pm] |
So... I know how I make music. It's a pretty straightforward thing for me now and feels pretty much repetitive and I'm bored. I'm thinking of only writing music for a while with another person as a band and I'm curious about you other musicians. I'm curious about your methods of song-writing with other people... I want to learn something new.
anyone? Bueller?

Witching Hour I would have to say, in my professional expertise, is thee Displacer album. I mean don’t get me wrong Cage Lullaby was a great album, and Arroyo and Moon_Phase absolutely worth listening to. But I think with the Witching Hour, Displacer has finally been able to successfully merge the cold atmospheric melodies with a warm low end, almost trip-hop, organic depth.
Gone is the only real previous criticism I had where it sounded like in production the bass and sort of groove had been massively reduced, to make the whole thing sound far too ambient.: Almost like the atmospheric melody sort of overtook the whole thing, but now, now oh boy, the bass takes its place right out in the front, in the open pressed forward for all to see and love. And the cheesy sounding movie samples don’t let you forget a sort of strange gothic morbidity to the whole affair. There is a definite reduction in the glitch IDM elements that, that shows a real progression in the work, as he swerves largely into more of a Techno Animal type electronic vein.
Yes indeed sir I think this may be the album to bring Displacer to a much larger audience. Jeez does this ever make me think of Techno Animal, but not at all in a bad or derivative way, but I think more in an I really miss that band type of way. Well screw it who needs them now. This is a perfect substitute. I really appreciate that the songs aren’t overly long as I have a thing with electronic music, where I tend to get bored if they go on too long, so yeah that is really groovy.
I think this will be a nice album to put on on those days where you just want to chill out at home and listen to something relaxing, but interesting. Something that will keep you interested and grooving, but at the same time is just cool enough to relax with a nice bottle or two of wine . Or maybe at those, you know cheesy like dinner bars. Where they do food and martinis and they always have the lamest laidback house on, well this would be way better, I would actually go to one of those bars if this was on. And I might even drink a martini, but more that likely I would order a rye and ginger, because that would just make more sense. And I would just sit there and feel so cool and really enjoy the whole damn thing. And be like yeah I’m sitting in a bar being so awesome. Okay just good like that.
I think I would have preferred a few more Displacer tracks than remixes though, as the only one that really stands out is the L’Ombre one. I mean they’re not bad or anything, just the groove is changed a little too much.

| great review from side-line |
[24 Oct 2008|09:51am] |
After having released his 3 first albums on the French M-Tronic label, Michael Morton aka Displacer now joined Tympanik Audio for a new chapter in his electronic experiments. What I especially like with Displacer is the fact this project avoids repeating itself. There’re of course no radical changes in sound, but some interesting and noticeable evolutions. With “The Witching Hour”, M. Morton probably released one of his most achieved releases to date. He still composes and creates some very unique electronic soundscapes, which he reinforced by samplings and great soundsculptures. The opening cuts “Low Moral Fiber” and “To Live, Love, Die… Or Kill!” he even adds some vague dub elements. The mix of these deep sounds and low rhythmic is simply irresistible and guarantees an overwhelming debut. The album progressively evolves towards more astral influences, like reinforcing the ambient side of Displacer. The “Warriors In Gods Army”-cut reveals such atmospheric ingredients while another piece like “Nightbeast” sounds maybe less atmospheric, but also reveals worthy sounds and bleeps. The 9th tracks brings us to the 2nd part of this release featuring remixes and collaborations. It starts with the excellent “Men Of Low Moral Fiber” reworked by Diff_Cult. This version is more bombastic while a mysterious sphere hangs over the song. Next comes a cool remix of “Nag Champa” by L’Ombre delivering some irresistible sound arrangements. The “Warriors In Dub’s Army” remixed by Larvae comes next and is a bit more into harder rhythms. Autoclav1.1 and ESA deliver the last remixes to this album. They for sure are the most famous names of the remix-list although not delivering the best tracks. Globally speaking “The Witching Hour” is a well-done opus and according to me the best one to date!
